Lack of Holiday Spirit

Hope that you are your family and friends had a wonderful holiday season.  But now that it is over, just wondering if you noticed what I did.  I usually start to feel the buzz around November or so and it starts to pick up as time goes on.  This year, there wasn't that much.  Stores, gas stations, clubs, etc.... No one really seemed to be in the holiday spirit.  Arguments over the proper phrase to use, credit card issues at some local stores, robberies on the rise.  What is going on?  When did we lose it and where did it go?  There was always a friendly and comforting feel when the holidays began to approach and now nothing but financial talk, rude customer service people,  stores at war with eachother.  I hope that next year the holidays bring a brighter, more welcoming feel.  For all our sakes Read more...

Those Who Will Be Missed

The year 2013 is coming to a close.  We have lost many great people this year to illness, accidents and misfortune.  Here's just the tip of the iceberg:  Conrad Bain-Diff'rent Strokes, Roger Ebert-Movie Critic, Lady Margaret Thatcher, James Gandolfini-Actor, Cory Monteith-Actor, Lou Reed-Musician, Nelson Mandela.  Those are just some of a large list of people dear to our hearts and minds.  This holiday season I hope that you and your family are well and continue to be so for quite some time.  Hold those dear to you close,  and always remember how blessed you are.  Have a wonderful, safe and blessed holiday season.    Teri Ryan Read more...

ROUND-ABOUTS

In the last year, round-abouts have been placed in the Chippewa Valley in hopes to alleviate traffic issues and the necessity for traffic lights.  Well, I think a class should have been taught to some.  The concept is not that hard.  You go off to the right, yielding to oncoming traffic from your left, follow the circle around until the exit you need.  You don't know how many times I have had to stop because someone went left into the round-about or stopped directly in the middle confused about the way to go.  Please pay attention to the arrows, and the signs and that you go counter-clockwise in a round-about.  Just trying to help. PUNISHED FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING

A Massachusetts teen is being punished by her school for driving her drunk friend home from a party.  The school said she is in violation of the district's zero tolerance policy against alcohol and drug use.  She was demoted from captain of the volleyball team and told she would be suspended. TEXT STOPS

New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo had announced the plans of placing "text stops" on their major highways and thruways.  They are actually rest stops and parking areas, but by placing signs on the roads that read "It can wait, Text Stop 5 miles", it makes an impression on the driver and gives him/her a moment of realization that texing at that time is not necessary.  How wonderful.  I think that all states should implement that idea, in hopes that the accidents and deaths caused by texting while driving will decrease.  What are your thoughts?  If there were sign like that would you second guess your usage of texting while driving?  Hope so. WRECKING BALL

There has been alot of talk lately about Miley Cyrus and her antics.  Just my opinion, but I really think someone that she trusts and loves should step in and try to direct her in a different direction than the one she is going.  She started off so well.  Respected by musicians for her talents, even being so young, and her acting as well.  I understand she is trying to find her way, her voice and her spirit, but I feel that she is on a destructive path that in the end will not only hurt her, but those young ladies and young men who have looked up to her.  She has gone from a young, beautiful, talented young girl, to a "Twerking" , jerking and now naked (in music video) young woman.  It's just my observation and opinion, but maybe the parents need to step in and take charge.  I can see a younger Brittney Spears approaching. Where Did Billy Ray Go Wrong?

Don't get me wrong, I am not blaming Billy Ray Cyrus for Mileys disturbing display on the VMAs, but.......   What was she thinking?  You are a young woman who has thousands of young girls that look up to you.  The daughter of a famous dad and fiance to another well known actor. Career suicide? or a plan to make a name for herself as a woman in control as opposed to "Hannah Montana"?  Well, she has sure made a name for herself now and not all good.  I hope that she looks back at that tape and sees what everyone else did.  It was like watching an accident happen that you couldn't stop, but you also couldn't look away.  Hope this is the last of that kind of behavior, but I don't think so. Manners

When I was a young girl, it was necessary to have manners.  You didn't get anything unless you said "please" or 'thank you".  When speaking to my elders, it was "yes sir or yes ma'am".  You shook hands when greeting someone and looked them in the eye during a conversation.  People used to hold the doors for you and help you with your bags at your car if you looked like you were in need of help.  I have notices over the years that the speed of our lives has left us with little time to do what is actually the "right thing".  Cutting in line in front of someone is alright, because you are in a hurry.  Not stopping to help an elderly woman out of the door, because you are in a hurry.  No please or thank you when ordering food at a restaurant, why?  Because, you guessed it, you are in a hurry.  Slow down, take your time, remember when you were a child, what a fantastic place it was to live.  Your children depend on you to teach and prepare them for what is to come.  Do unto others as you would have done unto you.  It's pretty simple. Elementary School/Cellphones?

On the morning show we were asking moms what they thought of elementary school children having cell phones.  Well, being a mom myself I think it's ridiculous in the sense that they are so small and irresponsible and at that age there really is no reason for them.  But now, on the other hand.  As a mom, I worry all the time.  So having a cell phone would allow more access to them as well as their ability to call home more often.  Such a dilema.  What do you think?  Are our lives so high-tech that even the little ones must participate?
