New School Year Begins Taking Focus with DPI Guidelines

Summer break is still officially in its early days (even if your kids have been home for months), but you could already be curious how the fall semester will look at your kid's school.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) issued "Education Forward" guidelines Monday. They bring fall into focus and give initial insight as to what can be done to maintain open classrooms while keeping students and staff safe.

More information and a link to the DPI's full report can be found through this link to the 715 Newsroom: https://715newsroom.com/2020/06/22/department-of-public-instruction-releases-guidelines-for-schools/

WI Rental Assistance Program Accepting Applications

Here's some good news if you've struggled with rent during the Covid-19 pandemic. Applications open today for Wisconsin Rental Assistance Program (WRAP), allowing eligible residents up to $3,000 to catch up on rent or make security deposits.

To qualify, you have to be an adult Wisconsin resident and your household income needs to be at or below 80% of the county median income in the month of or prior to the application date. Funds are paid directly to landlords and the program is being administered through the state's regional Community Action Program (CAP) agencies. Expect long hold times when calling and even wait lists to speak with CAP representatives.

Country Jam, Northern WI State Fair Canceled for 2020

Two more Chippewa Valley summer staples have been interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Organizers announced cancellation of the Northern Wisconsin State Fair on Monday, a first in the fair's nearly 123-year history, due to ongoing concerns about coronavirus and the implications of the large crowds anticipated to attend the Chippewa Falls tradition.

On a positive note, dates and some performers are already in place for July 7-11, 2021, and can be viewed through this link to 715Newsroom.com or copy/paste this in your browser for more: https://715newsroom.com/2020/06/01/a-first-for-the-fair

This announcement was followed by the rescheduling of Country Jam to July 15-17, 2021.

According to WEAU 13 News, if you already had tickets for this summer's event, you will be contacted by email. You are able to request a refund within 30 days if you cannot attend next summer. However, if you decide to hang onto your current tickets, you don't need to take any action and they will be honored next year.

Ellen Cuts Her Mom’s Hair

With Chippewa Valley hair salons reopening, there's excitement in just getting an appointment. Not everyone has that option just yet, so anybody who still has quarantine hair can empathize with Ellen DeGeneres and her mother.

For her 91st birthday, Mom got a home haircut (well, buzz, actually) from Ellen. As you'll see from the video, she did respectable work...even if the elder DeGeneres was less than impressed.

Prince Concert on YouTube for Charity

So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1985. Not the correct lyrics but it is the current situation.

Starting tonight at 7 and continuing over three days, YouTube is streaming a classic concert of Prince and the Revolution. It was recorded March 30th, 1985, in Syracuse, New York.

This show is significant in that was the first concert footage Prince ever released, and is now being streamed digitally for the first time. Tonight's event opens with a Q&A session with drummer Bobby Z.

It's free to watch, but if you choose to donate, money raised goes to the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. Google is then matching donations up to $5 million.

Josh Gad Reunites “Back to the Future” Cast Virtually

Do you want to build a reunion? Josh Gad, who your kids know as the voice of Olaf in Frozen movies, has a new YouTube series, Reunited Apart.

After opening with a virtual reunion of The Goonies, the second episode focused on Back to the Future. An impressive chunk of the cast and crew jumped online for the reunion. Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, director Robert Zemeckis, Huey Lewis and others participated.

In this episode, they reminisce about making the film and discuss its place today. And in a parallel we're glad they acknowledge, Lloyd suggests a crossover with Rick and Morty (face it, Doc and Marty were obvious influences).

Celebrate National Nurses Day, Week

Wednesday marks National Nurses Day, the beginning of National Nurses Week and culminating on International Nurses Day, May 12. Not coincidentally, that's also Florence Nightingale's birthday.

Here in the US, National Nurses Week began in 1954, though it was observed in October. More recently, President Reagan designated May 6 as "National Recognition Day for Nurses" in 1982. The American Nurses Association (ANA) then included the holiday into National Nurses Week in 1990.

Now more than ever, it's important to recognize and thank our nurses for the multiple critical roles they play every day.

Tour Frank Lloyd Wright Buildings Virtually

Even before the pandemic's Safer at Home guidelines, it would be an enormous challenge to visit many of Frank Lloyd Wright's designs.

Sure, a quick run down to the Madison area could knock a few off the list. Others require planes and even passports, while some aren't open to the public at all.

Thankfully, there's a solution. The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, together with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Unity Temple Restoration Foundation, have compiled #WrightVirtualVisits, giving you an inside look at some of the architect's most famous designs until July 9.
